Minor Karmic Items
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:18:35 am »
Perhaps one thing that I would find useful is a list of ideas for lower level brood items. They need use without being too powerful. Here are a few of mine.

Icon of the dragon: a statue that generates a level one karmic area at night. Basically a minor portable Horde.
Peep hole: a small glss that when placed against a door allows you to look through in the same way as a security peephole.
unerring pebble. A pebble that always hits what it is thrown at within 10m.
concealed blade: a knife that can only be found if the searcher knows you have it and has seen it. Pass through airport security and the metal detector goes off but it does not matter how many times the security officers search you they just never find it.
Karma battery: an item that allows you to recharge horde items more quickly.

Please add to the list.

Sounds like Enchanted Items to me. Or maybe I'm confused. Aren't karmic items those that have a karma rank, and enchanted those that have some kind of magical effect? Of course, many items are both.

Kind of...

As I read it there are 3 different items.

Karmic items that have no powers as such but are a karmic store the scion can use in a few ways including helping generate a horde that regenerates thier own karma.

Magic items that are karmic items that have a power or magic ability.

Horde items that are bought with an edge. These are magic items that used to be part of the dragon's original horde. You need a horde item of at least the right level to gain an awakened rank.

So if you have a party you have to have a rank 1,2,3,4... magic 'horde item' for each player. Rank 1 are very minor and rank 5 powerful and the likes of legends.

I thought it would be useful to build a list of minor magic items that can be used as rank 1 and 2 horde items.

Yeah, the "hoard item" bit confuses me a little as well.

As I read it, these are not special items different from the magic or karmic items. What the edge "hoard" does, is allow you to select an item in the modern world much like you would be able to select an item in the mystic age using your dragons hoard. So in other words, 1 pt. of magic abilities or 3 ranks of karma.

But again, I may be misreading that, so I welcome the discussion.

Page 51 of the PHB says a hoard edge gives you a single item that was a legacy from the dragon's hoard.

The way it is written you get one itwem that gets more powerful as you buy extra ranks. I don't like that much. How I run it is at rank one you find a minor rank 1 item at rank 2 a rank 2 item.... etc.

To me this fits better with the description of awakening on page 73. This makes buying hoard ranks compulsory to advance awakening ranks.

Hmpf, I can't say I like that. For one, compulsory advancements are something that itches me. It also makes it way too easy to reach hoard rank 5. And what do you do if you bought the rank, and the item gets lost?

I consider the hoard rank thing a way for the GM to keep the munchkins in check. If a player minimaxes his points so as to get ARs as quickly as possible, you can keep him in check by not giving him hoard items. On the other hand, aside from XPs you can reward players by having them find hoard items.

To get an AR you need the item, 10 modern and 10 legacy XP. So what if somone wants to push all their xp into swish items, they can but there is not a great benefit. It would be 15 modern XP to get the set that is a lot. In addition the GM controls the type of items they find. I try to match greater ones to the character's sire and dragon. One of the players who has Mabinogion as a sire is going to get a walnut that turns into a coracle.

My players seem to think there are far better things to buy than horde items. I also did not make it clear. The items are still fitted in the story and need finding. The XP spend just means I will insert them and perhaps write a story around them.
